Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital is seeking a Director of Finance and Accounting to join their team in Plattsburgh. This is a hybrid schedule role(remote and in-person).
Overview
The Director of Finance and Accounting is responsible for managing the Corporate Accounting Department. In summary, these responsibilities include:
- Production of monthly and annual financial statements for the organization in accordance with US GAAP & within UVMHN’s required timeline.
- Development and monitoring of effective internal controls over financial reporting.
- Management of the accounting, payroll, and accounts payable direct reports.
- Coordination of various external and internal audits; principally the annual financial statement audit.
- Supporting the compilation and submission of third party financial reports.
- Analyzing actual results to budgets and forecasts and preparing ad hoc financial analyses related to the operations of the organization.
- Compliance with tax regulations affecting the organization.
The Director of Finance and Accounting is a key financial leader who partners with the Associate VP of Finance and the CFO in performing core financial management responsibilities to ensure the financial health of the organization.
Responsibilities
Directs the preparation and review of the financial statements for the organization and its subsidiaries.
- Establishes, communicates timelines and manages monthly and year end closings.
- Leads accountants in the development, implementation and management of processes necessary for timely monthly and year end closes.
- Ensures the accurate and timely recording of financial transactions.
- Maintains the Chart of Accounts.
- Monitors and maintains internal controls, subsidiary ledgers, and account reconciliations, including compilation of asset and liability accounts.
- Ensures monthly consolidation of the organization and its subsidiaries.
- Prepares and analyzes Financial Statement reports for distribution to Senior Management and the Finance Subcommittee of the Board, within required timelines.
Develops and monitors effective internal controls.
- Oversees software administration, including user access, monthly close & audit protocols, and system structure & reporting hierarchies.
- Ensures the efficient utilization of accounting systems, taking advantage of system capabilities.
- Maintains interfaces with sub-systems and integrate new systems, where applicable.
- Reviews periodic reconciliations of accounts to prevent material misstatements and safeguard assets.
Manages general accounting, payroll, and accounts payable functions and direct reports.
- Hires, disciplines, evaluates and coaches direct reports.
- Provides training and mentoring for direct reports.
- Assigns work to maximize efficiency and provide growth for staff.
- Plans department's annual goals and objectives, including input of departmental budgets and adherence to appropriate expenditures within budgetary constraints.
- Monitors cash levels to keep the organization within target levels.
- Ensures payroll is processed timely, accurately, and all related filings are submitted (941’s, W2’s)
- Directs accounts payable to manage effective vendor relationships while focusing on maintaining a positive cash flow to the organization.
Coordinates various external and internal audits.
- Implements new financial standards and pronouncements, as applicable.
- Maintains information necessary to be in compliance with grant regulations.
- Serves as key player in audit coordination, including appropriate planning with External Auditors.
- Coordinates A133 audit for recipients of federal awards.
- Supports audits by third parties such as CMS & NYSDOH.
Supports critical financial analysis needs.
- Identify significant financial issues that require action and engage in the process to resolution.
- Partner with AVP Finance to analyze monthly actual results as part of periodic variance analysis
- Collaborate with others across the organization to improve operating margin performance (rev cycle analysis, spending reductions, business plan review)
Oversees corporate tax compliance issues for the organization and its subsidiaries.
- Evaluates policies and procedures to protect the organizations tax exempt status.
- Coordinates deliverables for compilation of Form 990, including all required schedules.
- Evaluates organizational structure changes and regulatory filing requirements, as appropriate.
- Coordinates all annual filings for the organization and its subsidiaries, in collaboration with UVMHN or external tax specialists.
Qualifications
- Finance, Business or accounting bachelor’s degree required.
- Business Master's degree preferred.
- CPA or similar professional designation preferred.
- Excellent analytical, problem solving, time management and organizational skills. Ability to assimilate and retain high levels of detail, ability to deal with an ever-changing environment, ability to meet defined time frames, strong customer service skills, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, self-starter who is able to work independently, and able to handle multiple tasks and projects. Must have the skills to direct the accounting process for a variety of companies. Ability to understand different industries and their various trends and practices is required.
- Five to ten years of accounting experience. Previous Five to ten years of accounting experience. experience should include financial statement preparation and analysis.
- Experience managing and supervising accounting or financial personnel is required.
- Strong Microsoft office skills to include those Word, Excel and PowerPoint is required.
