Position Summary:
Employees at WCU may be required to submit to campus based COVID 19 vaccination or testing requirements.
The primary location of this position is on the main Cullowhee, NC campus.
Directors of schools within the College of Business at WCU will be faculty members assigned by the dean to oversee the leadership and administrative aspects of the academic programs delivered by the faculty of the constituent disciplines within the school. The twelve-month position is leave earning and constitutes 1.0 FTE.
Rank will be either at the Associate Professor or Full Professor level and will be determined at the point of hire.
Characteristics of Effective School Director
Per the faculty of the School of AFIB, the following characteristics/skills are needed:
· Open communication skills/style to include consultation with faculty, particularly around curriculum sequencing and scheduling;
· Transparency;
· Inclusiveness;
· Advocacy for faculty resources for both the School of AFIB and the College of Business;
· Enthusiasm for mentoring faculty, including those who indicate interest in leadership roles
Program Leadership
The school director will be responsible for providing overall leadership for programs offered by the school, its disciplines, and faculty, which may include the following: conducting periodic meetings of faculty to discuss programmatic, discipline-specific, and/or school issues; ensuring the flow of critical information between the school/college and all program faculty; soliciting and submitting information relative to the school's resource needs; and allocating resources available to the school in a manner that maximizes the accomplishment of the organizational mission. Strong analytical/data skills are required for the school director.
Curriculum Oversight
The school director will be responsible for ensuring periodic curriculum review and regular assurance of learning activities are performed by the faculty for each discipline within the school, and will ensure that modifications to the curriculum initiated by faculty of the constituent disciplines receive appropriate deliberation and consultation with other concerned faculty. This responsibility includes working with the Associate Dean to ensure course/program modifications are entered into the Curriculog system. The school director will be responsible for course sequencing and scheduling; and development and maintenance of each program's curriculum guides and promotional materials. Normally many of these responsibilities will be delegated to faculty of the school's constituent disciplines or administrative support staff where appropriate, but the school director will coordinate these efforts and ensure timely completion.
Faculty Recruitment, Development, Mentoring, Load, and Evaluation
The school director will be responsible for managing the school's faculty, which typically includes: providing input to the dean for the college's staffing plan and hiring proposals in consultation with the associate dean and other school directors; empaneling committees for faculty searches; eliciting faculty participation in preparing job descriptions and advertising copy; certifying and documenting faculty qualifications and credentials (AA-21 forms, Q-grids, AFE, and faculty activities database); and assigning courses to achieve workload balance and to ensure adequate coverage for course offerings. The school director evaluates faculty annually and has primary responsibility for ensuring that collegial review document (CRD) standards are implemented fairly and impartially, and that faculty contribute to regular review and revision of the CRD. The school director will advise and mentor probationary faculty on tenure, promotion, and reappointment processes, and advise and mentor all faculty on professional development and engagement, promotion and post-tenure review. The school director will ensure faculty service burdens are equitably distributed and add appropriate value in contributing to the university's educational mission.
Program Planning & Evaluation
The school director will be responsible for ensuring all faculty of the constituent disciplines contribute to all program planning and evaluation activities, assuring faculty representation and contribution to assessment of student learning outcomes including submission of the 5-year Program Assessment Plan and the annual Assessment Report; assuring faculty participation in and contribution to preparation and review of program accreditation materials for SACS-COC and AACSB International.
Student Recruitment and Retention
The school director will be responsible for developing and maintaining materials and processes that promote student recruitment and retention in all programs provided or supported by the constituent disciplines. Such duties are normally delegated to the faculty with the relevant expertise in specific disciplines or who support specific programs: creating and updating promotional brochures and related literature; maintaining and updating school/disciplinary/program-specific websites or pages within the College of Business website; reviewing and updating catalog copy, degree completion plans, checklists, and other advising materials; providing text for letter generation to prospective students; assigning faculty advisors for all program or discipline-affiliated student organizations and activities such as majors' clubs, honor societies, recognition events, etc.; and recruiting students by coordinating faculty participation in open houses, new student orientation, alumni outreach activities, student/alumni placement activities, etc.
Outreach and Development
The school director will be responsible for representing the College of Business, the school, and the academic programs' interests in both internal and external endeavors and outreach. These activities may be delegated to faculty in specific disciplines directly invested in particular outreach and/or development activities/projects, which may include the following: coordinating program advisory boards; serving as liaison between specific programs and/or disciplines within the school and other campus constituencies and/or off-campus stakeholders; and participating in community events in which the College of Business, the school, or one of its constituent disciplines need representation. The school director will encourage all faculty to participate appropriately to university friend-raising activities and ensure they are appropriately recognized for doing so (e.g., in annual faculty evaluations). The school director will be available to support the Dean in fundraising efforts.
Teaching Load
The school director will teach three courses (nine credit hours) per academic year. The courses will be divided across funded semesters (currently Fall and Spring) at the discretion of the school director.
School directors will also perform other duties as needed and as assigned by the Dean of the College of Business.
Minimum Qualifications:
- J.D. or Ph.D. in Law
- Demonstration of continued publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or law reviews
- 5+ years of university/college level teaching experience
