Summary: The Director of Finance is mission-focused, passionate about working in a learning community, and strategically oriented.
Reporting to the Head of School, and partnering with school leadership and the board, the Director of Finance is responsible for the business, financial management, human resources management, and financial aid programs of the school. The Director of Finance , as a member of the Administrative Leadership Team, helps determine the strategic direction of the School, developing and executing plans to meet both short- and long-term goals. Waring School’s financial make up includes a gross revenue of ~ $5.5 million, an endowment of ~ $7 million, and net assets of ~ $14 million.
Key Responsibilities include:
Responsible for all business office operations (e.g. accounting, human resources, financial aid). Partner with the Head of School and Board of Trustees on strategic issues, and provide counsel regarding finances, debt management, budget preparation, long-term financial planning, facilities planning and development, compliance, human resources, information technology, and risk management
Coordinate and manage annual and long-term financial planning, including the operating and capital budgets, projected cash flows, and debt planning
Prepare and present financial reports, metrics and dashboards to the Head of School, Board of Trustees, and Committees; serve on and support the Finance Committee; coordinate and oversee the annual audit
Supervise Business Office personnel ensuring that all Business Office procedures are efficient and adhere to best practices
Serve as Financial Aid Manager
Serve as Human Resources Manager in the implementation and development of the School’s employment practices and policies; provide support and guidance to the Head of School and administrators around decisions involving HR policies and practices; administer the employee benefit plans, including the School’s pension plan
Partners with and provides support for other administrative areas (Admissions, Advancement, B&G, etc.) as appropriate
Represent Waring School at various regional, state, and national associations
Significant experience in a comparable role (e.g. Business Manager).
Strong background in finance, financial modeling, financial reporting and accounting standards, regulatory compliance, cash management, and budgeting
Ability to organize, prioritize, and delegate effectively
Excellent analytical and strategic thinking skills, with the ability to think broadly about the institution as a whole
Experience with capital projects and financing
Excellent judgment and decision-making abilities
Higher Certification (e.g. MBA or CPA) preferred
5 days, 40 hours/Full-Time
6 weeks annual vacation, plus holidays on Waring’s academic calendar
Attends various ancillary aspects of the school/admin program (e.g. HR orientation for faculty, Board meetings as appropriate, etc.)
Attends weekly Faculty Meeting (currently on Wednesdays from 3:30-5:30PM.)
Reports to the Head of School or designee
Salary is commensurate with experience. Comprehensive benefits package included, including retirement plan with match, health, dental, vision and life insurance, and Waring 50% tuition remission for dependent children after one year of service. Paid vacation time includes winter break, spring break, and the summer.
