Reporting to the School Director, the Director of Finance and Operations works in collaboration with other administrators to support the mission, vision and strategic direction of the school. The Director of Finance & Operations oversees WSMF’s accounting, bookkeeping, budgeting, human resources, and operations. This Director assists the School Director and the Board of Trustees in meeting WSMF’s fiduciary responsibilities; strategically managing the school’s resources and the value of its assets for the benefit of future generations.
WSMF is working to develop a strong financial position and to increase enrollment. WSMF’s incoming Director of Finance and Operations will have the opportunity to lead strategic financial planning to support a robust educational program. WSMF’s mission to “help students discover and develop their individual capacities so that they can fully engage in the world and contribute meaningfully to society” will need a forward-thinking Director of Finance and Operations as part of the school’s leadership team. It is essential that the Director of Finance and Operations creates a collaborative, positive and inclusive environment conducive to open communication, trust-building and maintaining confidentiality.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Partner with the School Director on all operational and strategic issues as they arise; provide strategic recommendations to the School Director based on financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation and revenue/expense analysis.
Oversee long-term, capital and operating budgetary planning and cost management in alignment with WSMF’s mission and strategic initiatives.
Engage the Board and the Finance Committee around issues, trends and changes in the operating and capital structures, with cash and investments and human resources.
Develop an endowment fund.
Financial and Operational Management
Ensure that financial record systems are maintained in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles; monitor use of all funds.
Coordinate and manage annual and long-term financial planning, including the operating and capital budgets, sources of funds, debt and revenue planning.
Manage all bookkeeping, accounting, payroll, and regulatory filing.
Build the infrastructure for and manage the School’s accessible tuition process.
Prepare and present financial reports and metrics to the School Director, along with the requisite board committees and the Board of Trustees as a whole.
Manage all supplier contracts and grant reporting requirements
Manage cash flow and forecasting; direct all financial, project-based and departmental accounting.
Oversee and coordinate an annual audit of financial records, financial position and business practices.
Manage risk and legal compliance to ensure the safety of personnel and students in their use of facilities and to maintain appropriate levels of insurance to protect the property and cover the liability of the school.
Assist the School Director with decisions regarding HR policies and legal compliance and practices including salary and benefit administration, ongoing oversight of WSMF’s employment policies and benefits programs; recommend enhancements or modifications as necessary.
Bid and oversee all insurance programs.
Oversee retirement, healthcare, and other employee benefits.
Serve on the Administrative Team.
Collaborate with the School Director and Facilities Manager on facility maintenance and new capital construction.
Partner with the School Director on technology infrastructure upgrades (technology knowledge is not required but a willingness to research).
Perform other duties as assigned by the School Director.
Qualifications: Education, Experience, and Skills
BA or higher in accounting or another Business related field.
Handle sensitive, confidential information appropriately.
Knowledge and experience with fund accounting, office management, bookkeeping, budgeting, benefits management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, collections, and loans.
Strong technology skills: MS Office suite, Google Drive, Quickbooks.
Ability to work with detailed information with a high degree of accuracy.
Initiative and ability to work independently; strongly self-motivated and able to manage multiple functions or projects simultaneously; high competence with both detailed and big picture tasks.
Analytical and strategic thinking skills; an ability to problem-solve and make thoughtful, good decisions.
Sense of humor, optimism, innovative-thinking, empathy, and excellent communication skills.

Our growing school, now in its 34th year, is a full member of AWSNA. Our school has over 100 children enrolled in nursery through eighth grade. Children in grades one through eight participate in several subject classes, including Physical Education, Music (Strings and Orchestra), Handwork, and German.
