Director of Finance and Operations

Job Summary:

The Director of Finance and Operations works under the direction of and reports to the Head of School or their designee. The individual must be an effective leader who can manage information, people, and processes. As such, they must be skillful in dealing effectively with a wide variety of issues, situations, and problems in collaboration with leadership, the Board, employees, and parents. The Director of Finance and Operations must produce consistently high-quality work while leading and motivating others to do the same.

Job Status:

The Director of Finance and Operations position is a full-time salaried position with all applicable benefits in accordance with School policy; including four weeks’ vacation, ten paid holidays, and health benefits as outlined annually effective immediately upon employment.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Supervises the work of the Controller and Business Office personnel and use standard accounting and bookkeeping procedures, to keep an accurate continuous record of the cash and financial position of the school while managing the financial operation of the school maintaining the institution’s financially stability.
• Prepare operating statements for the Head of School and the Board of Trustees.
• Oversees monthly report of expenditures for use of each individual budget center within the school.
• Establishes a plan and schedule for the preparation of the following fiscal year annual budget (including cash, operation and capital budgets) establishing key budgetary items such as enrollment goals, tuition, financial aid, and annual compensation increases normally presented at the winter Board of Trustees meeting .
• Oversees an annual audit of the school’s financial records and financial positions by a third-party accounting firm.

• Oversees all school purchasing, as well as the operation of the student Snack Bar, Country Store, and campus postal services.
• Oversees banking activities, payroll and benefits programs.
• Oversees risk management programs to ensure the safety of personnel and students in their use of the facilities and to maintain appropriate levels of insurance to protect the property and to cover the liability of the school in communication with the Head of School and Board of Trustees.
• Ensures the effective management of Dining Services and Facilities Departments to include food services, maintenance, grounds, and housekeeping.
• Assist the Head of School with decisions regarding salaries and benefits for all personnel.
• Work closely with the Chair of the Finance Committee on all financial matters and committee meetings.
• Represent the school at various local, regional, state, and national associations relative to the role of being the Director of Finance and Operations.
• Participate in the Strategic Planning process as requested by the Head of School
• Manage building/construction projects with the Head of School
• Be the liaison with legal counsel in legal matters as designated by the Head of School
• Oversees all rental and/or property acquisitions as designated by the Head of School
• Oversees the Director of Summer Programs and the collaboration of internal with external programs
• Oversee the Director of Campus Safety and all associated duties
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting or Business Administration
• Minimum of three years of experience managing accounting and finance functions at a Director level or above, is preferred
• A working knowledge of accounting principles and practices in independent school and non-profit sectors and/or being a Certified Public Accountant is preferred
• Individual should be proficient in computer systems and programs including Word Processing, Spreadsheet, and Accounting software, preferably Blackbaud
• The ideal candidate will be motivated, energetic, creative, organized, and comfortable working closely within a team with strong written and oral communication skills.
