ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF FINANCE , Media Laboratory , to manage a team that provides day-to-day financial services for a large, interdisciplinary research lab with current annual activities totaling over $80mm. Will manage the financial reporting, budgeting, planning, and forecasting processes for the lab and supervise a finance team of seven. Responsibilities include leading the financial planning process including annual budgets, multi-year forecasts, and monthly monitoring; overseeing the management of research revenues and expenditures; serving as a final escalation contact to PIs when financial advice or guidance is needed; actively identifying and evaluating trends, opportunities, and risks impacting the lab's financial position; working closely with the director of MAS (Program in Media Arts and Sciences) on high-level issues to ensure effectiveness of the team's collaboration and processes; developing materials for and delivering clear and effective presentations; working with the senior business analyst to develop key reports on the financial status of the lab's research groups; recommending actions to streamline processes, improve operational efficiencies, and identify opportunities for reducing operational costs; and serving as primary liaison to MIT's central financial groups and the Dean's Office.
REQUIRED : a bachelor's degree, preferably in a quantitative discipline; at least five years' financial management experience, including experience in an academic/research environment; computer and quantitative expertise, including advanced Excel and financial reporting skills; strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills; a history of supervising individuals and teams; and comfort and expertise dealing with a diverse academic and professional community.
