The mission of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health is to advance the public's health through learning, discovery and communication. To pursue the mission, the school produces knowledge through research then translates this knowledge into evidence that can be communicated to the public, policymakers, and practitioners to advance the health of populations. The Office of Research Administration supports the school's mission by serving as a central resource for the research community through the provision of expertise and leadership in obtaining and managing research funds. It acts as the institutional representative of the President and Fellows of Harvard College for the administration of sponsored projects for the school. The Office of Research Administration is comprised of research administrators that work in partnership with faculty to review and submit proposals for funding and to ensure that proposals and then awards conform and are managed according to sponsor guidelines and University policies.
The Financial Associate will support innovative research at the world's leading public health research institution. Areas of research are focused across nine academic departments which include Biostatistics, Environmental Health, Epidemiology, Genetics & Complex Diseases, Global Health & Population, Health Policy & Management, Immunology & Infectious Disease, Nutrition and Social Behavioural Sciences. The Financial Associate will work primarly with one academic department but will have an opportunity to be exposed to research happening across the school. They will also work closely with the Office of Research Administration and other central financial and research related offices.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Provides financial support to the department's financial and grants management team
Manage a small portfolio of sponsored and non-sponsored funds
Prepare monthly internal financial reports and salary distributions
Provides guidance to faculty and staff on policies and procedures related to the assigned portfolio
Supports post award activities including processing accounts receivables and accounts payables transactions (ex. vendor payments, invoices, journal entries, credit memos, corporate card reconciliations, and reimbursements)
Assist with the preparation of basic proposals electronic upload to the central office
Other duties as assigned

3+ years of related experience is required; a combination of education and experience may be considered
Bachelor's Degree is strongly preferred
Experience with spreadsheets strongly preferred
Experience with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word preferred
Works well independently and handles confidential information with discretion preferred
High level of initiative and motivation preferred
Experience being proactive, friendly, and confident in dealing with faculty and staff preferred
Excellent communication skills preferred
