The Director of Administration and Finance, a newly created position, will serve as the financial team leader and manager for College of Science and is a crucial member of the Dean's senior staff. As a collaborative partner with, and reporting to, the Associate Dean of Administration and Finance (ADAF), the Director will provide oversight of , financial planning and analysis, budget, accounting, strategic initiatives, and special projects as required by COSADAF and Dean and with the support of the Assistant Director of Finance and Operations and COS finance team members.
The Director of Administration and Finance is expected to be a key contributor to the team, serving under the ADAF, who manages Research Administration, Space and Safety, Data and Reporting, and College HR. A successful candidate will come in with deep expertise in finance and have a key understanding of many of these other administrative functions. All decisions made in the operation of the college effectively impact resources, from hiring, to teaching, to research and beyond, so the ideal candidate will possible a sound understanding of these other areas and be able to identify resource inefficiency and help to optimize COS resource use.
As de facto deputy to the ADAF, the ideal candidate will operate highly independently as a finance team leader, high-level manager and should be comfortable with and excited by the opportunity to take on additional responsibility in other areas of the Dean's Administration and Finance team. Specifically, the Director will:
Provide strategic management, oversight, analysis, and reporting for all of the financials within the college. Will be responsible for managing a team of financial professionals who assist with contributing to workflows, processes, and a culture around finance that encourages sustained financial health and well-being for greater Northeastern University and the College of Science.
Director will be responsible, with direction from the Dean and ADAF, for managing the overall college budget, annual budgets, and ensuring strong financial planning, projection and analysis from the dept view up to college level view.
Understand all aspects of COS revenue from undergrad/grad enrollments, financial aid, indirect cost recovery, buy/sell, combined majors, international programs, etc and be able to dive into the data sources and extract trends and share valuable insights that drive good decisions making and investment by leadership.
Possess knowledge of the impact of research initiatives and serve as College of Science lead overseeing financials for our various centers, departments, and institutes within the College (Barnett, NetSci, CILS, CCNR, etc) Director should coordinate each units' financials in a manner that roll up to the top-level college plan to enable COS to understand all aspects of spend, with the focus on implementing and maintaining compliance with internal and external regulations.
Lead development of mission critical budget, finance, and resource-based reporting and workflows aimed at helping to support local department management in order to enable chairs manage against key KPIs and understand how to bring greater success to their departments and the college as well as to create efficiencies. Interpret results to navigate complex financial scenarios that complement our complicated budget system.
Leads COS with ADAF in preparing annual and long-range capital budgeting (faculty hiring, space, etc).
Under the direction of the ADAF, takes the lead on special projects; for example, strategic analysis, planning, complex modelling and reporting, in response to the rapidly evolving environment..
Helps to lead cost reduction strategies and ensures resources are allocated properly to allow the Dean to allocate funding to the highest promise areas for investment.
COS Director will work in partnership with the Director of Space Planning and Operations to manage critical space decisions to solve our strategic space needs while managing cost benefit of all space investments.
The Director will also play a key role in understanding and directing our data and reporting portfolio and will propose new technology solution to run an informed, efficient, administrative operation in partnership and collaboration with the Associate Director of Data and Reporting.
The Director manages the Assistant Director of Finance and Operations, and finance/budget team.
The Director is expected to work with the leadership team to create a culture of accountability and rely on data driven decision making in the College of Science around a number of budgetary issues as well as the key revenue and expense activities that result in our budget.
Provides training on budget related matters. Ensures internal University and college policies are followed. Serves as a key point of contact for the college with the university on fiscal related matters.
College of Science brings in $160M plus in revenue generator including a complex portfolio of grants, gifts, endowments, undergrad, grad, buy/sell, combined majors. Our expenditure includes a complex portfolio of $40M of annual research grants and the position will be welcomed and expected to help us reform and bring a best in practice financial planning and analysis operation to COS.
oBachelor's Degree required; Masters of Business Administration or Finance preferred. o7-10 years of experience, with specific budgeting/financial management experience in higher education preferred. oExperience with Responsibility Center Management (RCM) model helpful, but not required. oAbility to prioritize and achieve key projects/tasks while managing multiple concurrent and time-conflicting projects and activities. oBe tactful and possesses a high-degree of interpersonal skills in order to negotiation and problem solve at an executive level. oSupervisory experience required. oMust work well in a team setting and have good interpersonal and communication skills. oMust be able to prioritize and be organized and detail oriented. oSolid systems and reporting experience required. oExcellent Excel skills and familiarity with database software preferred.
