Founded in 1975 Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago (NHS) is one of Chicago's largest and most innovative neighborhood revitalization organizations, serving over 5,000 clients last year through homeownership promotion and lending, homeownership preservation, and property preservation. NHS Chicago has a staff of 83 located at three office locations and a current operating budget of 11 million.
(NHS) is seeking an innovative and strategic finance professional to serve as the Director of Finance. The Director of Finance will serve as NHS’ chief financial strategist and manager of organizational planning processes as well as oversee all fiscal and administrative operations. Specifically, the Director of Finance has responsibility for leading and overseeing the financial, accounting, compliance, and technology functions of NHS. In that capacity he/she will ensure that the fiscal and planning aspects associated with homeowner education, lending and real estate transactions are aligned with the mission. Additionally, the Director of Finance will provide direction related to investments, capital development and asset management. The ideal individual must be able to analyze current operational and financial processes and practices, enhance them, and seek improvement, and opportunity for growth. He/She will also continually assess and manage reporting systems and structures, and develop value-added solutions and strategies.
Position Summary: The Director of Finance position is responsible for maximizing the return on financial assets by establishing financial policies, procedures, controls and reporting systems. This position ensures legal and regulatory compliance for all accounting and financial reporting functions. The Director of Finance also oversees cost and general accounting, accounts receivable/collection and payroll and risk management.
Areas of Responsibility:
Guide financial decisions by establishing, monitoring and enforcing policies and procedures.
Oversee all financial operations and direct corporate financial planning and structure.
Coordinate, analyze and report the financial performance of the organization to Management, the Board of Directors and the Finance committee (financial performance, projections and other special projects as required).
Prepare short and long-term financial forecasts of financial performance for use with internal management and external parties.
Oversee audit and tax functions, coordinate activities with outside audit firms and review firms performance.
Protect assets by establishing, monitoring and enforcing internal controls.
Maximize return and limits risk on cash by minimizing cash balances and making investments.
Provide status of financial condition of the company by collecting, interpreting and reporting key financial data.
Ensure compliance with federal, state and local legal requirements by researching existing and new legislation, consulting with outside advisors, and filing financial reports.Advise management of actions and potential risks.
Arrange for audits as required and appropriate.
Manage budget and controls expenses effectively.
Hire, train, develop and appraises staff effectively. Takes corrective action as necessary on a timely basis and in accordance with company policy, consults with Human Resources as appropriate.
Keep up-to-date on information and technology affecting functional area(s) to increase innovation and ensure compliance.
Automate Finance business process to drive efficiency.
Partner with departments across the organization to drive improvements in end-to-end business processes.
Perform ongoing assessments of system capabilities and implement functionality to maximize investment.
Represent Finance as the liaison with the IT department on all Finance system projects.
Maintain and support the general ledger, accounts payable, purchasing, disbursement, travel & entertainment, and budgeting and financial reporting applications.
Lead the development, testing and implementation across the Finance team for the new release version and system enhancements.
Develop, implement and maintain financial reports and tools to facilitate timely and accurate financial information.
Coordinate Finance team knowledge management activities, including ensuring processes and policies are documented, updated, and the finance team content and resources (documents, files, forms, analyses, etc.) are organized, searchable, and accessible.
Identify training opportunities, develop plans and execute project to implement Finance and organizational training on business processes.
Participate in and lead special project teams.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree (BA) in finance, accounting or economics and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience is required; a Master’s in
business administration, finance and/or a CPA certification is a plus.
A minimum of 7-10 years’ experience within finance in a not-for-profit environment is required. Prior experience within the housing industry is a plus.
Advanced proficiency in MS Office required. Hands on experience in implementation and administering finance software such as MIP is a plus.
Strong proficiency in all aspects of corporate accounting, and all pertinent GAAP, SOX compliance and some benefits administration experience to support HR.
Must possess strong team leadership and management experience; including direct supervision of finance and accounting professionals, performance
management and staff engagement.
Excellent oral and written communication skills including; presentation skills to C-suite, board of directors, community constituents, partners and clients.
