Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Associate Director for Finance and Administration (ADFA) holds primary responsibility for providing strategic leadership and management in support of overarching LASPAU goals in finance and administration. Working collaboratively with the finance and administration team, the ADFA develops and manages financial operations, directs the preparation of the annual LASPAU budget and cooperates with program office staff to ensure sound budgeting for individual programs. He/she serves as liaison with external auditors, supervises financial reporting and certifies controls over financial operations, supervises preparation of tax forms, supervises financial flows involving both sponsored programs and LASPAU-generated funds, manages day-to-day accounting operations, coordinates relationship with relevant counterparts at Harvard, ensures fiduciary compliance, prepares accurate and timely financial reports, coordinates closely with sponsored program financial managers in the US, Latin America, and elsewhere, and, as directed, interacts with the LASPAU Board of Trustees. The ADFA supervises administration employees responsible for LASPAU physical facilities and infrastructure, employee time and attendance reporting and administrative inventory.
The Associate Director works closely with the Finance and Audit Committee of the Board and is responsible for providing financial reports and analyses which may be requested by Finance & Audit Committee and attends Finance & Audit Committee and other Board of Trustees meetings during the year. Key Objectives:
Develop and lead the strategic financial planning and related processes in support of LASPAU objectives.
Maintain excellent internal controls over transaction processing and the complete and timely reconciliations of account activity and balances. Suggest ongoing improvements to accounting systems and the financial reports to management.
Manage the financial and administrative systems that drive efficient use of resources, leverage infrastructure, support high quality of service and promote strategic decision-making and user accountability.
Manage the continual improvement of the annual financial cycle, including budgeting process, through education of other managers on financial issues impacting their budgets.
Guide the development and management of LASPAU's financial reporting
Develop and manage financial reporting models that ensure accuracy, flexibility, transparency, timeliness, and that track and support senior management decision-making needs.
Manage the financial staff to create financial practices that ensure efficient and accurate reporting of financial information.
Minimize financial risk to LASPAU and to Harvard through the development, management, communication, and tracking of financial compliance and policy oversight efforts.
A graduate degree in accounting, finance or other related field highly desirable.
Thorough understanding of policies, reporting and audits in accordance with GAAP and OMB circulars A-110, A-122 and A-133.
Must communicate proficiently – written and orally at all levels of organization including the Board of Trustees.
Spanish language capability is highly desirable.
Must work well independently and with diverse groups, handle confidential information, manage multiple projects efficiently.
Experience with non-profits and sponsored program financial management (both federal and non-federal agencies).
Previous work experience in Latin America desirable.
