The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences has more than 650 full time faculty and staff integrating and accelerating five key missions of scientific discovery, clinical innovation and service, educational excellence, community engagement and commitment, and professionalism and leadership.With a total annual budget of $100 million this Department seeks to advance understanding of the nature of the brain and of behavior and to explore the role of personal meaning and the therapeutic relationship in human health.The Director of Finance and Administration (DFA) position serves as the key business leader for the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in the School of Medicine. The successful candidate will partner with the department chair in setting strategic priorities in the operations of the department, and its faculty with the goals and initiatives of the overall clinical enterprise. Additionally, the DFA will manage strategic financial planning for the department, and provide operational expertise in business development in support of strategic growth initiatives.
For the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, the DFA provides leadership and direction for all financial and administrative functions including: budgeting and financial management, strategic planning, human resources, grant and contract administration, academic affairs, facilities/space, compliance, and safety. The DFA manages department operations, establishes the administration's organizational structure and environment and has oversight for administrative policies and procedures in the department. In this strategic role, the DFA will utilize strategic financial planning, and operational expertise in business development to further the growth of the department. With this growth the DFA will also serve as a people leader to develop and mentor staff within the department.
In addition to the above department responsibilities, the DFA will work across Stanford Medicine with Stanford's four affiliated hospitals: Stanford Healthcare, Stanford Children's Health, VA Palo Alto, and Stanford Healthcare Valley Care.
The DFA's primary reporting relationship is to the Chair of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences with a secondary reporting relationship to the Senior Associate Dean for Finance & Administration in the School of Medicine. The DFA serves as the liaison to the school and university in all business matters for the department. As the business partner with the chair, this critical leadership position will ensure sound management of the department and work with the chair and faculty leaders on new and existing research, clinical and education programs and initiatives to enable the department to achieve its strategic and operational goals.
Education & Experience:
Master's degree (BA, Health Care Administration, Public health or related field) or combination of education and relevant experience. Seven years of progressively responsible managerial experience including financial and budget preparation. Five years of supervisory experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrated strategic leadership, planning and change management skills
Ability to demonstrate a high level of diplomacy in persuading and influencing a wide variety of people at various levels to achieve results.
Advanced financial expertise in accounting, budget planning, and financial forecasting.
Strong knowledge of industry standards and/or regulatory requirements.
Demonstrated ability to identify and analyze all pertinent information/data to make and communicate decisions to meet the unit's current and future financial, research, academic and administrative needs. Exceptional negotiation and effective interpersonal skills negotiation and political acumen skills.
Ability to establish a culture of integrity within their unit and with those external to the units.
Demonstrates to others that he/she is direct, truthful and credible.
Demonstrated skills as a receptive listener, influential and persuasive and seeks to understand the differing sides of each situation.

Certifications and Licenses:
Experience in an academic medical center
Demonstrated skills in faculty relations
Demonstrated understanding of the management issues in a highly complex research environment.
Demonstrated senior-level leadership, strategic partnership, negotiation and change management skills
Demonstrated expertise in strategic financial planning
Demonstrated operational expertise in business development in support of strategic growth initiatives
Demonstrated skills and experience in human resources management, affirmative action practices and policy implementation
Demonstrated ability to recruit, motivate, and develop strong staff, supervisors, and managers.
The successful candidate will most likely come from a department/division within a well-respected, top-tier academic medical center with exposure to research, clinical and education functions.
He/she will be an accomplished professional, with executive presence, and demonstrated communication and leadership skills, who can cultivate an environment of excellence and collaboration to augment the department's academic, research, clinical, and service endeavors.
