The Finance Division at Carnegie Mellon University responsible for providing financial management, enterprise planning and stewardship in support of education, research, and strategic goals of the university. As part of the Business Systems and Services Team, the payroll department supports the entire scope of pay operations for CMU, to include staff, faculty and students, international and domestic multi-state locations, and works in close collaboration with the human resources division.

We are seeking a knowledgeable and motivated Payroll Director to join our leadership team, contribute to the transformation, and make a difference. This is an exciting opportunity for someone to evaluate, develop, recommend, and implement payroll policies, processes and system improvements designed to improve business operations within the university. Reporting up through the finance division, you will lead and develop a team in processing payroll in a compliant and accurate manner. You will be responsible for managing and directing the day-to-day operations, to include supervising and distributing work, facilitating issues, auditing staff transactions and communications for accuracy and compliance, and supporting professional development, coaching, and mentoring of the staff.
Core responsibilities include:
Provide leadership and management of university payroll processes by establishing strategies for executing payroll policies, procedures, processes, functions, activities, and related services such that payrolls are processed efficiently with minimal adjustments and retroactive corrections.
Ensuring tax calculations and withholdings from all payrolls are accurate and filed in a timely manner.
Directing and managing activities related to W2 processing
Continuously analyze federal, state, and local tax compliance regulations and initiate system changes as needed to align with these requirements.
Collaborate with all university constituents to actively identify ways to gain processing efficiencies and/or resolve system related issues.
Provide technical subject matter expertise to university leadership and staff for consideration and decision-making.
Managing projects related to payroll, including integration of the Qatar, Rwanda, and Australia campuses
Other examples include (but not limited to): contribute to developing strategies and plans for future project initiatives; analytical research and development of metrics; business re-engineering activities

Bachelor's degree in business, Accounting, finance, or related field required; Master's degree preferred.
Minimum of ten years payroll experience, demonstrating career progression with six years in a leadership role.
Experience with Workday HCM, Benefits, and Payroll preferred.
Experience in shared services organization processing multiple payrolls high desired.
Prior experience in a higher education and/or consulting/implementation environment preferred.
Certified Payroll Professionals (CPP) is a plus.
