The Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics (SCIPP), a complex and innovative ORU whose mission is to do frontier research, teaching, and graduate education in experimental and theoretical particle physics and particle astrophysics
The current Institute membership includes 28 faculty from the departments of Physics and Astronomy & Astrophysics, 17 post-doctoral employees, 6 research scientists, 8 professional staff, three dozen graduate students, undergraduate lab assistants, and visiting researchers.
With broadly defined objectives, the Assistant Director provides administrative direction and financial management; serves as liaison with collaborating institutions worldwide, unit heads at national laboratories, and multiple federal granting agencies; has signature authority on all Institute accounts; and oversees a combined budget of approximately $6M. The Assistant Director understands and supports administrative and budgetary needs of SCIPP Principal Investigators, participates in planning and oversees arrangements for several international meetings annually, hosted by SCIPP.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to resolve conflicts and mediate disputes with faculty, researchers, and staff at all levels of the organization.
Demonstrated ability to prioritize and assess the urgency of arising issues and to recognize when help is needed.
Knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.
Ability to analyze needs (staffing space equipment, facilities, etc), exercise sound judgment, and work effectively under the pressure of multiple deadlines.
