UC Berkeley Extension is the continuing education division of the University of California, Berkeley. Extension is an essential part of the University's mission to extend the research and scholarship of UC Berkeley to a global community. Extension provides increased access to higher education for all students, including online and international students, and partners with corporations and the community to develop the workforce.
The Director of Finance has overall responsibility for all financial, compliance, and business services for UC Berkeley Extension. The Director of Finance, in conjunction with the Chief Operating Officer (COO), provides strategic direction and overall program management for division-wide financial planning and budgeting, analysis and controls, and business services. The position ensures that Extension's considerable resources, with an annual budget of more than $60 million, are deployed in the most efficient manner possible to maximize the school's competitive position, future health and viability, and growth potential, while anticipating and minimizing internal and external risks to the organization.
The Director of Finance directs the program, staff, and activities of the financial analysis and planning and business services functions and contributes directly to projects of major strategic significance in association with the COO and Dean's Leadership Team. The incumbent is expected to develop a comprehensive understanding of Extension's financial and competitive environment to serve as a subject matter expert and key contributor in the division's strategic and financial planning.
Responsible for creation, maintenance and reporting on operational and capital budgets and budget processes, academic and staff budgeted FTE, performance of financial planning, human resources FTE recommendations, and finance and human resource planning.
Make decisions, set objectives, and direct subordinate analysts on Extension's program of financial management, business operations, and institutional strategy, and deploying the division's financial, human, and intellectual assets to greatest advantage.
Frequently interact with subordinate professionals, customers and/or functional peer group managers. Represents the financial and strategic interests of Extension in working with campus and UCOP partners and peers, other administrative and academic directors within Extension, specially chartered project groups and committees, and other initiatives on efforts of key importance to Extension.
Manage the coordination of activities of a section or department with responsibility for results in terms of costs, methods, and employees.
Regularly interact with the Dean and senior management on matters concerning the full spectrum of educational, strategic, and operational activities at Extension.
Demonstrated strong knowledge of finance policies, practices and systems, including budgeting and reporting techniques, fund accounting, cash flow operations, long-range fee planning, business operations, human resource planning, and financial modeling and analysis.
Must have effective verbal and written communication skills including the ability to develop and/or distill complex financial, operational, or strategic analysis into easily understandable products and actionable recommendations.
Position requires inter-personal skills and ability to work effectively across and outside the organization at all levels.
Client services oriented, has excellent listening, critical thinking and analytical skills.
Ability to multi-task and prioritize responsibilities.
Ability to inspire, organize, and direct the activities of subordinate staff and influence peers and leadership within the organization.
Ability to successfully complete a criminal background check.
Ability to conduct complex business analysis and produce written reports and or presentation with recommendations.
Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Professional certification preferred.
