Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Director of Finance and Operations for the SAS English Department. This position reports to the Chair of the Department of English. The Director of Finance and Operations (Director) serves as the department's (and all affiliated programs) Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer and works with the faculty leadership and staff in developing and implementing the financial and administrative structure of the Department. Responsible areas include but are not limited to the SAS English Department, the SAS Writing Program, the Center for Cultural Analysis, Writers House, the Program in American Language Studies, ESL, REDI, Rutgers Future Scholars, and the Friends of Rutgers English. The Director works independently within broadly defined objectives, performs professional work consistent with a comprehensive understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and practices (GAAP), and possesses an excellent understanding and application of concepts, theories, principles, practices, terminology and applied bases of accounting.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Provides financial oversight; the Director oversees the department's and program's financial services activities including but not limited to planning, budgeting, reconciliation, and stewardship of a $40 M budget.
Provides financial advice and insight to the Chair, supervises approximately 15 full-time staff, and represents the Chair, program directors, and the department/programs on a variety of committees and workgroups.
Responsible for all departmental/programmatic HR/Personnel functions (approximately 650 total payroll, including ~ 89 graduate students, 50 tenured faculty, 56 non-tenured faculty, 150 PTLs and ~300 tutors), facilities management, and oversight of administering the undergraduate and graduate academic programs.
Works with the appropriate faculty committees on the financial aspects of space planning, facilities safety and security, oversight of technical support staff and IT services.
Develops, communicates and enforces policies and procedures to ensure proper internal controls and safeguarding of departmental assets, and to provide reliable financial information to a wide range of users internally and externally.
Oversees development and implementation of departmental/programmatic financial and personnel systems.
Represents the department/programs on SAS and university-wide committees.
Serves as Primary Approver for procurement/financial transactions and as Primary Approver for payroll related matters.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a bachelor's degree in business or finance; or an equivalent combination of education and or experience.
A minimum of five years of senior management experience with budgeting and supervisory responsibility.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must be able to think strategically, handle complex organizational detail, and negotiate and resolve conflict.
Excellent communication, data gathering/analysis, and presentation skills.
Must possess strong computer skills and database systems expertise.
Strong oral and written communication skills are extremely important.
The ability to creatively handle detailed work and multiple concurrent tasks is important.
Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver's license would be required for this position.
Advanced degree or MBA preferred
Knowledge of the university's regulations, procedures, and policies are desired.
