The Assistant Dean for the College of Letters and Science (L&S), is one of the most important administrative positions at the largest college on the UC Berkeley campus, and represents a unique opportunity to participate in both administrative and academic leadership. The successful candidate will have significant opportunities to restructure L&S administration and to strengthen the College?s oversight of three-quarters of undergraduate and graduate education at UC Berkeley. L&S is composed of five divisions (Arts & Humanities, Biological Sciences, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, and Undergraduate Division), which include over 40 academic departments, approximately 800 faculty, 19,000 students, and 600 staff. L&S is supported by a General Fund budget of $245 million; annual expenditures, including restricted funds, exceed $455 million. The Assistant Dean is the chief administrative officer for the College and reports directly to the Executive Dean of L&S.
Working closely with the five Deans of the College in support of its academic mission, the Assistant Dean advises deans, chairs and managers on financial and administrative policies and strategies as they affect their units. Oversees the College?s comprehensive financial plan, establishes and enforces College-wide financial and administrative policies and procedures, manages accounting operations, and assures adherence to sound fiscal policies and practices in regard to all funds and categories of expense throughout the College. The Assistant Dean represents the College to campus administrative units and serves on campus-level policy and advisory committees.
Provides leadership to departmental managers and acts as liaison for L&S and on behalf of L&S departments with campus units including Campus Shared Services, Budget and Finance, Capital Planning and Space Management, Academic Personnel Office, Graduate Division, etc. The Assistant Dean acts as a change agent and provides leadership and oversight for the administration of the academic and non-academic human resources functions of the College. Provides financial and administrative guidance to L&S College Relations and participates in the development of College and divisional fundraising priorities and strategies. Advises on long-range planning for the delivery of computing services and manages the L&S IT function.
In conjunction with the Deans, manages the L&S Deans? Office staff consisting of financial, administrative, and human resources professionals.Knowledge/Skills: ? Excellent leadership abilities to oversee multiple functions or departments through subordinate managers ? Advanced knowledge of higher education planning, budgeting and fund accounting principles, and detailed knowledge of corresponding UC and campus procedures ? Advanced skills in strategy development, higher education planning, and change management ? Advanced degree in related area MBA, MPA, and/or equivalent experience/training ? Minimum of ten years progressively responsible experience managing multiple units in complex administrative settings ? Advanced knowledge of administrative management theory and ability to translate into practice ? An understanding of the sources, weaknesses and strengths of financial and non-financial data as tools for planning and decision-making ? Excellent skills to work collaboratively and act persuasively in sensitive situations; skills in conflict management techniques. Skills in establishing and implementing customer service standards as well as a grasp of organizational dynamics, group and individual interactions and sensitivities ? Exceptionally effective oral and written communication skills and political acumen. Education/Training: ? Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. ? Minimum of ten years progressively responsible experience managing multiple units in complex administrative settings.
