With over 600 employees, the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) serves the university's five campuses by advocating for and facilitating the research and scholarly activities of faculty, staff and students. This is the chief financial officer position for the OVPR. This position provides strategic financial leadership and direction for all OVPR administrative units, academic centers, institutes and programs. Primary responsibilities include budgeting, financial planning and analysis, reporting, forecasting, policy compliance, supervision of staff and financial operations oversight. This position also provides direction and management of OVPR facilities including space planning.
The successful candidate for this position must demonstrate their ability to handle complex accounting structures and situations like technology commercialization finances, external and internal sales accounting, grants management, internal research institutional funds allocation, endowment utilization, and shared services analysis.
Advise vice president, associate vice presidents, assistant vice president and chief of staff, OVPR senior leadership, faculty and staff to ensure fiscal responsibility and effective use of a range of funding sources. Serves as a member of the OVPR executive leadership team.
Leads, develops, and directs the short-term and long-term finance strategies supporting OVPR business objectives, ensuring alignment with University policy. Prepares reports and forecasts as necessary.
Serves as liaison and RRC (resource responsibility center) manager to the Office of Budget and Finance. As such, the position has a “dotted-line” relationship to the University’s chief financial officer.
Directs a team of 5 finance staff serving as the OVPR financial cluster and financial shared services teams.
Provides oversight, analysis and advice to the finance staff located in the centers, institutes, and service units within OVPR.
Directs a range of finance and accounting services including post-award grants administration, internal/external sales accounting, endowment utilization, reconciliations, budget development, and financial reporting.
Develops and executes investment strategies and manages investment portfolios on behalf of the OVPR. Serves as the primary contact with the UMN Foundation. Prepares reports as necessary.
Determines how to achieve the directives set by the institution's strategy and top executive leadership generally as they relate to the research cost pool; considers the intentions/goals of the institution and implements a strategy to fulfill them.
Partners and advises the OVPR and central human resources teams to ensure a seamless work process between the finance and human resource staff.
Provides direction and management of OVPR facilities including space planning. As such, this role is the primary contact with University Services Facilities Management and Space Planning staff.
