In partnership with the Department Chair and Associate Chair, the Director develops and executes a strategic plan for the Department of Chemistry, while overseeing the areas of finance, research administration, information technology, safety, space and facilities, human resources, academic program administration, and external relations. The Chemistry department is the largest department in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences with over 30 faculty, 110 postdoctoral fellows, 60 research and administrative staff, and 260 graduate students. One of the premier Chemistry programs in the world, Northwestern’ s Department of Chemistry achieves tremendous success in teaching and research and is at the forefront of interdisciplinary academic ventures and partnerships.
Developing and executing the department’s strategic plan, in partnership with the Chair and Associate Chair. Advising the Chair and faculty as to the utilization of the department’s human, financial, and space resources in order to accomplish the department’s mission of teaching and research.
Overseeing the department’s general day-to-day operations. Conducting regular process optimization and improvement evaluations of administrative, financial, facility, functions, etc. Streamlining processes to reduce resource investment needs.
Overseeing the department’s financial, academic, and research operations and administration and making recommendations for resource allocation. Developing annual operating budgets, in consultation with the Business Administrator and Chair. Managing complex budgets to fund strategic vision, mission and goals. Overseeing the research administration support structure to facilitate and enhance all research administration activities for faculty.
Managing and developing staff members, assuring the department has a high-performing, productive staff. Consistently refining organizational structure to address the needs of the department. Assisting the Chair in providing professional development support for tenure and teaching line faculty and in developing agendas and organization of regular faculty business meetings and retreats. Assisting faculty members with management and recruitment activities for tenure line and teaching line faculty, graduate student, laboratory and administrative personnel. Overseeing appointments of international faculty and staff as well as visiting scholars, post-doctoral fellows, and research associates. Developing partnerships with faculty and staff affiliated with research centers to optimize staff efficiency and assure smooth communication.
Overseeing facilities management and space utilization, including office and laboratory moves and upgrades. Working closely with the Chair and Associate Dean for Facilities and Planning to ensure strategic use of all available space. Assuring department’s routine maintenance is attended to in a timely manner. Coordinating and monitoring building renovations, construction project and related budget. Driving university level strategic space/construction initiatives on behalf of the College and department. Overseeing the loading dock and receiving operations of the department.
Overseeing support for the information technology needs of faculty, staff, and students. Acting as liaison to IT management to ensure technology systems are available to meet objectives of strategic plan. Ensuring necessary hardware, software and network infrastructure technology services are implemented. Participating in developing IT strategy to meet the mission and needs of the organization. Supervising technical support staff.
Overseeing development and implementation of processes and procedures related to safety and security, in collaboration with the department’s designated research safety officer and the Office of Research Safety. Overseeing implementation of associated training.
Attending and participating in planning meetings at the department, College and University level. Responding to a variety of requests and inquiries from faculty and staff on behalf of the Chair. Informing the Chair of all pressing and urgent matters.
Performing other related duties as assigned.

Successful completion of a full course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a master's or higher degree in science, engineering, or related field.
At least five years of management-level experience in a large multifaceted organization or scientific/research-oriented enterprise.
Experience developing and managing complex budgets.
High degree of tact and sensitivity in dealing collaboratively with a wide range of faculty and administrators.
Proven ability to work in a complex leadership structure.
Strong commitment to fostering superb service to the faculty community.
Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with administrators, faculty, and staff throughout the department, College and the University.
Highly developed analytical skills, including the ability to utilize extensive data sets to inform specific decisions and broad policy discussions.
