Reporting to the Chair of Surgery, and to the Deputy Dean, YSM Finance and Administration, the Vice Chair of Finance and Administration manages an annual operating budget of approximately $100 million. The position oversees business operations and internal controls, grant and sponsored agreements, and daily operations for approximately 100 full time faculty and 250 research faculty, trainees and unionized and exempt staff members.
The Vice Chair will be expected to provide administrative leadership in dealing with complex and difficult financial challenges and will demonstrate a business savviness to play a major, proactive role in dealing with the ever-changing and often unpredictable financial/fiscal pressures that face all leading academic medical centers today. The Vice Chair will be looked to by the Chair to provide leadership in strategic thinking about new revenue opportunities based on sound business principles and to work constructively with the entities related to the Department (i.e. the hospitals within the Yale New Haven Health system and Yale Medicine) to facilitate fair funds flow to the department. The Vice Chair will also be responsible for working, and negotiating, with community hospitals on behalf of the Department.
The Vice Chair will have a high degree of authority and, in partnership with the Chair and Deputy Dean, direct the strategic agenda, program and policy and development and operational planning for the Department. He/she is responsible for all administrative functions and operational affairs of the Department of Surgery. The Vice Chair will supervise and provide mentoring and professional development for the administrative managers of the Sections. He/she will be ultimately responsible for the overall operations of the Sections, including financial management and planning, support services, facilities, purchasing and inventory, information systems and security, health and safety, compliance, medical education, human resources/faculty affairs and marketing.
Preferred Education: 7-10 years experience in a healthcare environment and demonstrated success in managing complex programs. Proven track record as a strategic leader with experience implementing value-added initiatives. Experience working across a complex health system with both academic and community hospitals. Master's degree preferred. Experience preparing budgets, forecasts and financial plans.
