Doña Ana County, home to the City of Las Cruces and New Mexico State University, is seeking a Director of Finance/CFO. The County, with a population of 210,000 is located in Mesilla Valley just northwest of El Paso. The region has more than one million residents making it the 58th largest metro area in the U.S. Much of Doña Ana’s 3,800 square miles rests within view of the majestic Organ Mountains along its eastern edge. The Valley is home to the Rio Grande River that meanders from north to south through the region.
Doña Ana is ideally located at the crossroads of Interstates 10 and 25, and is quickly becoming an economic and cultural hub for the southwest. Attractions include spectacular year-round golf, unique special events, world-class Mexican food, historic attractions and two national monuments – Organ Mountain Desert Peaks and White Sands National Monument – located less than an hour from Las Cruces! The community is a blend of unique attractions, culture, historical sites and superb year-round weather with 320 days of sunshine per year!
The County is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners. The County Manager is responsible for overseeing the County’s 900 employees, except for five elected officials: County Assessor, County Clerk, County Probate Judge, County Sherriff, and the County Treasurer. Doña Ana County provides a full range of traditional county and municipal services.
The Finance Director reports to the County Manager and is responsible for the financial management of the County and oversees the preparation and oversight of an annual combined funds budget of $135 million. The Finance Department consists of 21 employees responsible for five principal components: General Ledger; Payroll, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Budget. The Department is widely recognized for its strong fiscal condition with relatively little debt and five straight years with no audit findings.

Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, public administration, or related field and have a minimum of five years of experience in a senior level financial position. A CPA and/or an advanced degree are preferred. The ideal candidate should have significant experience and knowledge in the following areas: debt issuance, organizational budgeting, ability to implement financial best practices, and experience working with elected boards, commissions and department directors. Other important attributes include being a team player and willing to work to creatively solve financial constraints. The salary range will extend to over $100,000 DOQ/E, with outstanding benefits and a very low cost of living.
