TMI seeks a full-time Director of Finance and Accounting to oversee of all aspects of the school’s financial and accounting functions. A strong candidate will have more than seven (7) years progressive financial and accounting experience. Financial responsibilities will include financial analysis, budgeting, accounting oversight, examining tuition levels, financial aid application review, student billing, revenue strategy, capital planning, risk management, debt management, financial reporting, audit oversight, internal controls, investment management and endowment tracking. Additionally, this position will liaise with the Finance Committee and will deliver periodic presentations to the Board of Governors.
Develops long range strategic and financial planning including acumen with fiscal modeling and data analysis.
Prepares the annual operating budget and regular financial statements.
Updates the school’s leadership regarding the school’s financial position, including identification of emerging issues.
Develops and manages efficient financial systems, reporting, and procedures, in cooperation with others, throughout the school, to ensure the creation of appropriate financial controls and procedures to manage school resources consistent with budget.
Explores efficiencies to improve the school’s financial position.
Oversees and performs various business-office related functions such as managing banking accounts, account reconciliations, cash management, tax filings/compliance, payroll, accounts payable/receivable, financial reporting, campus housing expenditures, and student billing.
Reviews all agreements concerning financial obligations, such as contracts for products or services and other actions requiring a commitment of financial resources.
Reviews and summarizes documents such as wills and trusts in support of the Headmaster and Advancement Office in regard to bequests, estate planning and litigation in cooperation and coordination with accounting and legal support.
Controls of the flow of cash through the organization and maintenance of the integrity of funds, securities and other valuable documents and assets.
Oversees the development, administration, and reporting of the operating and capital budgets to the Head of School, the Board of Directors and specific committees.
Reviews comprehensive business insurance programs including the purchase of appropriate property, casualty, liability and workers’ compensation insurance, development of proactive risk management practices and oversight of risk management activities and service.
Works closely with the Director of Operations in supporting the operational functions and programs associated with such areas as facilities, maintenance, risk management, and food services to ensure the financial well-being of the organization.
Serves as key staff resource to the Board of Directors’ finance, development, and audit committees; working closely with committee chairs to help organize agendas, meeting minutes and meeting materials.
Works with the Audit Committee, auditors and school staff to facilitate planning and completion of an independent financial audit to include review of all internal systems, controls and reporting procedures.
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or directly related field.
Must have more than seven (7) years progressive financial and accounting experience managing a $13+million budget in an independent school or closely related environment.
Strong knowledge of independent school finance, accounting practices, budgeting and fiscal reporting.
Strong knowledge of budget preparation and management, and financial forecasting.
Strong knowledge of cost control principles, federal and state financial regulations including generally accepted accounting principles.
Strong understanding of the accounts payable process and interpreting vendor invoices, statements, check requests, purchase orders, contracts and other requests for payment.
Strong understanding of the accounts receivable process and general bookkeeping procedures.
Strong working knowledge on G/L reconciliation and analysis.
Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements, and projections.
Ability to review statutory/regulatory or other policy language and apply requirements associated with invoice processing.
Strong orientation to detail and ability to maintain accuracy in detecting discrepancies.
Ability to develop, refine and maintain financial systems in a school or non-profit setting.
Ability to manage and mentor staff.
Ability to build common purpose in a diverse community through effective collaboration and information sharing.
Proven experience working with a governing board, and internal and external constituents.
Proficient in a variety of accounting software systems, databases and spreadsheets; superior skill level with Microsoft Excel.
Ability to identify, balance and prioritize the needs of the school.
Strong organizational skills to perform multiple work assignments.
Excellent and effective interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, in order to report on financial affairs of the school to its leadership in a clear and concise manner.
Strong negotiation, analytical, and decision-making skills.
Willingness to collaborate with other school leaders and provide analytical data for them as needed.
