Rutgers New Jersey Medical School is seeking a Finance Manager to provide support to senior leadership within the Department of Surgery. Key responsibilities include oversight of all financial and related activities for a large, complex department having multiple financial initiatives, including patient billing and revenue, large grants and the management of significant budgets. Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Manages the department financial office; performs analyses to identify revenue collection issues and other trends; reconciles and controls expenses; and develops business plans under the direction of the vice chair of administration and the department chair.
Supervises financial staff, and oversees divisional administrators and other professional staff in the absence of the administrative director. Collaborates with divisional administrators to pinpoint areas of financial weakness and develop/implement corrective action.
Ensures that projects and initiatives are completed diligently and on time and coordinates the reports of project members for the vice chair of administration and the chair.
Participates in strategic planning in concert with the organization's goals which contribute toward market growth, revenue enhancement, cost containment/maximizing productivity, and the operational priorities of the department.
Supports the development of an annual operating budget ensuring it aligns with strategic priorities and champions its acceptance by senior leadership.
Provides financial oversight and controls; procedures and practices; development, implementation and management of operational budgets, grants and contracts, endowments, gifts and faculty practice revenues.
Develops and manages processes to conduct annual review of time and effort, productivity and funding for faculty, and compiles productivity, compliance, and profit/loss reports.
Works closely with the Vice Chair and senior faculty leadership in the department to develop and maintain a sound financial model including overhead allocation, service line profit and loss statements, and faculty dashboards.
Supports negotiations by the department administrator and chairperson for institutional budgetary support for operational activities, recruitment packages, capital procurement and facility improvements.
Ensures that the day-to-day financial operations of the department, and its centers and divisions; including payroll, month-end reporting, and accounts payable activities are accomplished in accordance with established procedures.
Analyzes clinical revenues to identify collection problems, billing issues and other trends.
Prepares or reviews all travel, check and purchase order requests for approval by the department administrator or the chairperson.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree. Equivalent experience, education and/or training may be substituted for the education requirements.
At least seven (7) years of progressively increasing experience in a financial management role in an academic medical school or related healthcare setting.
At least one (1) year of supervisory responsibility.
Demonstrated experience in successful fiscal management.
Experience with spreadsheet applications software.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including excellent written and oral communication.
Knowledge of operating procedures of best practices for health care organizations.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Lifting up to 25 pounds.
