The Vice President of Finance & Accounting is primarily responsible for safeguarding the assets of the Montana State University Alumni Foundation and its subsidiaries by ensuring fiscally sound controls are in place and all accounting entries are proper. Further, the Vice President is responsible for effectively managing the finance and accounting department. As a member of the Alumni Foundation’s leadership team, the Vice President oversees accounting efforts, including gift receipting and accounts payable, audit, budget processes, and investments. The Vice President is a key contributor in strategic/operational planning, especially as it relates to both short- and long-term financial forecasting. The Vice President reports directly to the Alumni Foundation’s President & CEO.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Vice President of Finance & Accounting (“Vice President”) is primarily responsible for safeguarding the assets of the Montana State University Alumni Foundation (“Alumni Foundation”) and its subsidiaries by ensuring fiscally sound controls are in place and all accounting entries are proper. Further, the Vice President is responsible for effectively managing the finance and accounting department. As a member of the Alumni Foundation’s leadership team, the Vice President oversees accounting efforts, including gift receipting and accounts payable, audit, budget processes and investments. The Vice President is a key contributor in strategic/operational planning, especially as it relates to both short- and long-term financial forecasting. The Vice President reports directly to the Alumni Foundation’s President & CEO.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manage and actively participate in the timely, accurate and consistent recording and reporting of all financial matters for the Alumni Foundation and subsidiaries including: monthly accounting reports, audit, budget, 990, operational/project cost studies, and other external and internal reports. Identify and develop key metrics and dashboard reports and present reports/information upon request of the President & CEO.
Supervise the Alumni Foundation’s finance and accounting department through oversight of day-to-day areas of focus and performance management; provide opportunities for professional and personal development and lead recruitment, training, and retention efforts for the team as needed, while overseeing the general management of the finance and accounting department, its team members and functions.
Maximize the Alumni Foundation’s financial performance and asset growth through the recommendation and implementation of strategic, proactive asset growth initiatives including cost-savings and revenue-generating opportunities.
Work with the Director of Investments and Special Projects to ensure best practices relative to investments, asset growth, asset allocation and fund management.
Along with the Alumni Foundation’s leadership team, collaboratively develop and implement the Alumni Foundation’s strategic plans. Oversee both short-term and long-term financial planning and forecasting and serve as the lead on strategies relating to finance, accounting, asset growth and management.
Serve as liaison to Governance Committee for all accounting related issues (audit, 990, etc).
Serve as primary liaison to Budget Committee for annual budget development and monthly reporting.
Build and maintain professional relationships with key MSU employees, including the Vice Presidents, Athletic Director, Deans, and Department Heads to ensure communication of Alumni Foundation financial information, activities, and policies.
Monitor compliance requirements for all applicable federal, state, and regulatory areas including the IRS, Secretary of State, Department of Labor & Industry, and the Office of the Commissioner of Securities & Insurance to maintain the Alumni Foundation’s reputation and good standing as it relates to matters of finance, accounting, and asset management.
Mitigate financial risk by developing and maintaining systems of internal controls and adequately insuring the corporation, its assets, and its people.
Fulfill responsibilities in accordance with all corporate policies and applicable laws.
Affect and maintain a professional, proactive, positive, highly collaborative, and performance-centric work environment.
Fulfill other responsibilities and duties as assigned by the President & CEO.

Preferred Experience: Minimum of six years of experience as a financial officer, accountant, and/or managing financial director with progressive responsibility and at least four years in a leadership or managerial capacity.
Education Required: Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, finance, or closely related field.
Education Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree and professional certification (e.g. CPA, CFA, CIMA, CIC, etc.) or Master’s degree in accounting, finance or business administration.
SPECIAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Thorough working knowledge of the theory, principles, practices and techniques of accounting management.
Proven track record of ethical and strategic leadership, collaborative problem solving, and positive program and personnel management and supervision.
Excellent personal computer skills with ability to analyze financials, create original documents, perform varied research and communicate electronically.
Ability to analyze facts and circumstances and arrive at sound conclusions and decisions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, donors, various University personnel, service providers, and the public.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to make effective public presentations.
High standard of professional ethics.
