Stanford University School of Medicine, one of the top five research-intensive medical schools in the country, is actively recruiting for a dynamic candidate to serve as Director of Finance and Administration (DFA) for the Department of Chemical and Systems Biology https://chemsysbio.stanford.edu. With 12 faculty, 49 graduate students, and 44 postdoctoral fellows, the department seeks to advance biomedical science through molecular and quantitative approaches, focusing on basic science research and translating laboratory discoveries into new clinical therapies. The department is one of the premier systems biology departments in the country, attracting stellar graduate students and fellows who advance to positions as top scientists and academic leaders in their field. The department currently has an annual budget of $19 million.
This position reports directly to the Chair of Chemical and Systems Biology with a secondary reporting relationship to the Schools Senior Associate Dean of Finance and Administration. The DFA provides leadership of all financial and administrative functions for the department including: budgeting and financial management, strategic planning, human resources, grant and contract administration, academic affairs, facilities/space, compliance, and safety. The DFA manages the department operations, establishes the administrations organizational structure and environment and has oversight for the administrative policies and procedures in the department.
This position is a key staff leadership position and responsibilities include:
Establish departments administrative mission and goals. Partner with faculty leadership on departmental affairs and represent needs and goals to internal and external parties. Streamline business processes and improve operational effectiveness. Develop business plans.
Analyze needs and recommend changes in staffing, facilities, health and safety compliance, finance, technology and administrative functions. Work with the Chair and Dean's Office regarding resources.
Responsible for overall fiscal wellness and financial operations. Develop and monitor consolidated budget; implement financial growth and sustainability strategies.
Manage staff in the day-to-day operations. Responsible for workforce planning, hiring and retaining staff, coaching and development of direct reports, and accountable for employee performance.
May independently or in collaboration with human resources managers, guide faculty supervisors in the interpretation and implementation of policies and procedures.
Represent the unit's needs in regard to research and service facilities.
Oversee management of all students, fellows, and graduate program administration.
Interpret, implement and ensure compliance with academic and administrative policies and procedures.

Bachelors degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience and three years (minimum) of progressively responsible general managerial experience, including HR strategy/negotiations/change management; financial and budget preparation and oversight, as well as two years of supervisory experience.
Strongly desire a Masters degree (Business Administration, Health Care Administration, Public Health or related field).
