A proactive business partner, responsible for providing financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, analysis and reporting for effective business decision support (BDS). The Finance Manager is required to provide finance expertise and critical financial analytical challenge with Business Unit management, with aim of supporting improved business performance and minimizing loss in as an efficient and effective means as possible, while maintaining a strong level of internal control. This role has to analyze large amounts of data to understand relevant information that drives performance. This includes engaging in complex research to gain data from multiple sources as well as gaining an understanding of fulfillment systems, reconciliation to the general ledger, and the effect on intercompany eliminations. The FM is required to proactively identify problem areas and key issues that are directly related to problem assessment and provide recommendations to appropriate levels of management for resolution and assist with implementation.
This position reports directly to the Finance Director, will work closely with BU Management team and will receive support from the global finance Centre of Expertise. This role also leads and mentors two direct reports.
Main Activities and Responsibilities
Financial Planning, Budgeting and Forecasting
Advise the business on shaping the BU strategic direction
Drive value creation through providing clearly constructed recommendations for action.
Use forecasting tools to develop scenario analysis.
Develop 'what if' scenarios for BU costs.
Provide financial insight at review meetings to drive actions and foster a no surprises culture.
Provide & own the financials underpinning the forecasts & strategic plan.
Provide constructive challenge to forecasts.
Own forecast commentaries that provide insight into the business.
Review and agree scope of budget transfers with receivers / senders.
Balance stakeholder needs to deliver high quality information at the right time in the right way and right first time.
Monthly performance analysis on responsibility area on BU expenses, trends and report to BU with commentary and insight on trends and variances.
Support management by providing finance insight and identifying business drivers, BU cost drivers, and KPIs for the monthly operational and business performance scorecards.
Prepare and provide insight and expertise into customer and product cost analysis.
Prepare and provide insight and expertise into infrastructure projects.
Be a key point of contact for ad-hoc analysis and reporting requirements from the defined business area. Participate in the product proposal process, selecting profitable projects for development, improving sales and profitability forecasting for individual titles. Serves as key point of contact for M&A related efforts, including driving financial due diligence, owning the valuation model and partnering with BU management and key finance stakeholders to ensure efficient post-acquisition integration of processes and systems. Partner with key members of organization tangential to CS to gain insight into areas not directly controlled by BU. Act as influencer in driving for results in matrix environment by ensuring that targets are clear and agreed upon by all parties.
Analyze and challenge business performance based on the financial data. Provide insight to support recommendations for improvement or change.
Demonstrate high level of expertise running enquiries and reporting from the Elsevier financial reporting systems (Oracle and HFM) and associated financial reporting tools. Working largely independently, assist with support for, and co-ordination with, the Reporting Centre of Expertise in maintaining and developing the standard suite of financial reports. Have thorough understanding of source systems feeding general ledger and provide insight into explanation of results as well as creation of new reporting.
Participate and support ad-hoc analysis and reporting requirements for specific business initiatives that may arise from time to time. This may include monitoring and analysis of performance improvement initiatives, M&A activities, restructuring programs, cost savings and indirect spend analysis.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experiences
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting or related area. MBA or advanced business degree helpful.
Minimum 6 years relevant experience in an accounting and/or controller role, preferably within a large and complex international organization.
Experience in financial control and financial/management reporting.
Business skills: ability to contribute to overall business strategy and to support management team to achieve strategic goals.
System knowledge: Excel (advanced level), PowerPoint, Hyperion, Oracle.
Fluent in English, both spoken and written.
Flexible and willing to travel as and when required (potentially up to 15%)
