The Director, Finance position is charged with ensuring accurate, timely GAAP, tax, and grants accounting and reporting to meet compliance standards and provide accurate, relevant financial information. This position also oversees accounting services including payroll, accounts receivable, and accounts payable, ensuring timely collections and prompt and accurate payments. Partnership across AWEA and flexibility to meet evolving business needs without sacrificing critical controls is essential to the success of this role. The Director, Finance should leverage subject expertise to positively influence change across the Association and make sure upstream changes are assessed in terms of financial impact and appropriately integrated into finance activities. This position also guides development and use of analysis tools and monitoring reports to help assess performance of products and programs.
Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:
GAAP accounting and reporting. Supervises financial reporting, payroll management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets accounting, and investments accounting. Ensures timely accounting close activities each month and ensures reconciliations to source data are accurate and efficient. Coordinates audit activities.
Timely and accurate tax accounting, payments, and reporting, including state sales tax, payroll taxes, and unrelated business income tax. Coordinates with CFO and audit firm to prepare annual 990 filing to the IRS.
Cash management including bank reconciliation, payment processing (lockbox, PayPal, etc.) and investment accounts.
Develops and guides budgeting processes and implements management reports to analyze program profitability, working closely with the managers of those programs to determine what information would be most valuable.
Finance department leadership on projects including association and/or accounting system updates, assessment and integration of new products and services AWEA may choose to offer, identification and analysis of revenue and cost savings opportunities, and development of long-term financial plans.
Maintains the Association’s accounting systems, making recommendations and updating functionality, ensuring data input in a timely manner; and resolving accounting system problems.
Leads and coaches a team of 3-4 individuals. Ensures team members are appropriately trained and that procedures are current and documented. Keeps financial records that are thorough and organized.

Education and/or Experience:

Qualified applicants may possess any combination of education and experience enabling them to successfully perform the responsibilities of the position. Preferred qualifications are: Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting; CPA strongly preferred; graduate degree a plus. A progressive combination of 5-10 years directly related and management experience. Previous experience in association or non-profit organizations is ideal. Experience with Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains, Web-based Payables and Payroll systems, and coordinating audits are a plus.
